Nahid warns BNP against ‘autocratic path’, urges reform implementation

Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam has warned the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party that continued resistance to reforms could trigger renewed public unrest.

Speaking at a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday, he accused BNP of obstructing reform initiatives following the mass uprising and failing to honour commitments made through a public referendum.

Nahid alleged that the party had opposed key reform proposals and was attempting to reintroduce partisan control over state institutions.

He cautioned that such moves could lead to another wave of protests, saying the youth and citizens who participated in previous movements could return to the streets.

The opposition leader also criticised the government’s handling of the economy and energy situation, claiming authorities were downplaying key challenges.

The rally, organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, brought together leaders of several opposition groups who called for implementation of reform measures linked to the July Charter.

Other speakers echoed concerns over governance and urged authorities to address public demands through dialogue and policy action.
