The government has raised fuel prices at the consumer level, citing rising costs in the international market, with the new rates taking effect from Sunday.

According to a government release, diesel now costs Tk 115 per litre, up from Tk 100, while octane has increased to Tk 140 from Tk 120. Petrol has been set at Tk 135 per litre, up from Tk 116, and kerosene at Tk 130 from Tk 112.

The mid-month adjustment marks a departure from the automatic pricing system introduced in March 2024, under which prices are typically set once a month.

Officials said the increase reflects pressure from global energy markets, which have become volatile amid tensions in the Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments.

The impact has been felt locally, with reports of increased demand at filling stations, though authorities maintain that supply remains stable.

The government has also intensified enforcement against illegal stockpiling, with more than 500,000 litres of fuel reportedly recovered during recent drives.

Earlier, officials had indicated efforts to avoid price hikes, but they warned that prolonged instability in global markets could make it difficult to sustain subsidies.

Authorities said future adjustments will depend on developments in the international energy situation.
