Industries Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir on Sunday told parliament that corruption and money laundering allegations against S Alam Group have not affected any project under his ministry.
Responding to a question from an opposition lawmaker, he said the ministry has no direct link with the group and therefore has no role in handling issues such as unpaid salaries or employment of its workers.
He also clarified that there is no plan to appoint receivers to manage the group’s seized assets or factories.
On fertiliser production, the minister said gas shortages worsened by global disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis have limited operations at urea plants.
At present, only Ghorashal-Palash Fertilizer Public Limited Company is in production, he said.
To meet demand, the government is importing around 700,000 tonnes of urea from multiple sources, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, along with international procurement.
He added that Shahjalal Fertiliser Company Limited is expected to resume production from May 1 if gas supply improves.
The minister also said efforts are underway to secure key raw materials such as rock phosphate and phosphoric acid through government-to-government agreements with several countries.
