Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called for a structured roadmap with technical support from UNESCO to address the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation.
The call came during a meeting with UNESCO’s country representative to Bangladesh, Susan Vize, at the secretariat on Wednesday.
During the discussion, the UNESCO official outlined ongoing initiatives in Bangladesh, including efforts to strengthen media development and promote policy frameworks to counter false information.
She said the organisation is placing strong emphasis on fact-checking and is training university students in information verification techniques.
The minister welcomed the initiative and said there is scope to expand collaboration in the media sector, particularly in ensuring transparency and credibility in the digital space.
The UNESCO representative assured continued support for Bangladesh in tackling misinformation challenges.
State Minister Yeaser Khan Choudhury and Secretary Mahbuba Farjana were also present at the meeting.
