Classes and examinations at Mymensingh Medical College have been suspended, and students have been ordered to vacate dormitories after a violent clash between two groups at a student hostel, prompting an official investigation.

College authorities also formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident, said Principal Prof Md Nazmul Alam Khan.

According to a media statement issued on Saturday morning, following an emergency academic council meeting held in response to Friday night’s violence, all academic activities and examinations will remain suspended for seven days. Students were instructed to leave their hostels immediately from Saturday morning.

In a separate notice, the principal announced the formation of the inquiry committee. The body is headed by Prof Seheli Zannat Sultana, with Prof Shamimul Masud Ahmed as member and Prof Mohammad Rafiqul Hoque as member secretary. It has been directed to submit its report within seven working days.

The clash broke out around 9pm on Friday at the Baghmara student hostel of the medical college between two factions of the Bangladesh Chhatra Dal.

Two third-year students—Md Muaz and Mir Hamidur—were injured.

Students said Muaz is associated with a group led by Chhatra Dal Convenor Tanvir Abdullah, while Hamidur belongs to the faction of Senior Joint Convenor Nure Jawad Rutab.

Kotwali Model Police chief Md Shibirul Islam said Muaz went to Hamidur’s room, where an initial altercation broke out over refuelling a motorcycle, which escalated into a scuffle. Hamidur and his associates allegedly beat Muaz and forced him out.

Later, when Hamidur went out for tea, he was reportedly attacked with a steel pipe, leaving him injured in the head.

In retaliation, Muaz is said to have taken shelter in a room as Hamidur’s group chased him. His supporters then rushed in, triggering a back-and-forth chase between the two sides before police intervened and restored order.

Police Camp chief at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Md Nazrul Islam said Muaz was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while Hamidur is being treated in Ward No. 6. Both sustained head injuries.

Police said one person named Nafiul Islam has been detained, though no case has yet been filed.

College authorities confirmed that action will be taken after the probe report is submitted.
