Authorities at Jahangirnagar University have detained a female student over allegations of consuming cannabis inside a residential hall.

The student, Sanjida Amir Inisha, was reportedly inside a room at Nawab Faizunnesa Hall when officials entered following a complaint from student leaders.

University officials said the room belongs to another student who was not present at the time.

During the inspection, authorities claimed they recovered cannabis and other intoxicating items.

The hall provost confirmed that the student is a resident of a different hall and was later handed over to her own hall authorities.

The room has been locked for further review.
A leader from Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, however, denied the allegation, saying the student had only been smoking cigarettes and was under mental stress.

The university has formed a five-member probe committee led by the hall warden to investigate the incident.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within three days, after which further action will be decided.
