Arrest warrants issued against former VC, 25 others in Abu Sayed murder case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has accepted the investigation report in the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, who was killed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

As part of its latest decision, the tribunal has issued arrest warrants against 26 individuals, including the university’s former vice-chancellor, Hasibur Rahman.

The order was issued on Monday, June 30, by a bench led by Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. Prosecutor Gazi M.H. Tamim later confirmed the tribunal’s decision.

Previously, on June 15, the tribunal had directed the concerned investigation agency to submit its final report by July 14 and fixed June 26 for a hearing in the case.

That directive came from a separate bench led by the tribunal’s chairman, Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mojumder.

During Monday’s proceedings, the prosecution team was represented by Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, along with prosecutors Gazi Monowar Hossain, B.M. Sultan Mahmud, and S.M. Moinul Karim.

Defense lawyers Rashedul Haque Khokon and Delwar Hossain Sohel appeared for the accused.

According to the prosecution, Abu Sayeed was killed by police gunfire during the student-led anti-discrimination movement. Former sub-inspector Amir Hossain and constable Sujon Chandra Roy were directly involved in the shooting.

Additionally, university proctor Shariful Islam and then-student leader of the ruling party‍‍`s student wing, Imran Chowdhury Akash, were accused of incitement and aiding the incident. Four accused individuals are already in custody in connection with separate cases.

On June 26, in line with tribunal directives, the final investigation report was submitted to the prosecution. The report names 30 individuals as being involved in the murder.
