TikTok developing new version for US users

TikTok has not publicly commented on the reported app changes or the current status of negotiations.

TikTok is reportedly developing a new version of its app specifically for users in the United States as it prepares for a potential sale to a group of American investors.

The move comes amid ongoing negotiations involving the US and China regarding the future of the popular short-video platform’s American operations.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the new US-specific version of the app is expected to be launched on app stores by September 5.

Users will eventually be required to download this new version to continue accessing TikTok services. However, the existing app will remain functional until at least March next year, though that timeline remains subject to change.

This development follows statements by US President Donald Trump, who recently said discussions with China over a potential TikTok deal could begin as early as Monday or Tuesday.

Trump also noted that the United States "pretty much" has a deal in place for the sale of TikTok’s US operations.

Last month, the President extended the deadline for ByteDance, TikTok‍‍`s parent company based in China, to divest its US assets to September 17.

A previous effort to spin off TikTok’s US business into a new, investor-led American company had stalled earlier this year after China signaled it would not approve the transaction.

That position came in response to heightened trade tensions, including increased US tariffs on Chinese imports.

President Trump has indicated that any final deal involving TikTok will likely require approval from Chinese authorities as well.

TikTok has not publicly commented on the reported app changes or the current status of negotiations.
