Bangladesh Awami League has canceled nomination papers of two candidates ahead of the forthcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections as they are accused in a case filed over Nasirnagar communal mayhem in Brahmanbaria.
The candidates are Abul Hashem of Sadar Union and Atikur Rahman of Haripur Union who are replaced by Putul Rani Bishwas and Wasim Ahmed respectively.
The ruling party disclosed the matter on Wednesday (October 14) night.
On Tuesday the AL nominated Abul Hashem and Atikur Rahman to race the chairman posts of two UPs.
Atikur Rahman is the sitting chairman of Haripur Union and a leader of the local Jubo League. Atik was the mastermind allegedly behind orchestrating the attack on Hindu communities in Nasirnagar. Sadar Union’s incumbent chairman and local Awami League assistant publicity secretary Abul Hashem was also accused of the charge of spreading violence.
House, homesteads, personal belongings and temples of the Hindu communities were attacked, vandalized and set on fire on October 30, 2016, following a Facebook post that was claimed to have underestimated religious sentiment.
About three thousand anonymous were accused in eight cases filed over the incident. Police pressed a charge sheet after 13 months on December 11 in 2017 accusing 228 people including Atikur Rahman and Abul Hashem.
