Bangladeshi-origin NYPD officer among 4 killed in US shooting

A Bangladeshi-origin police officer was among four people shot dead in a tragic incident in Manhattan, New York.

The officer, 36-year-old Didarul Islam, had been serving with the New York Police Department (NYPD) for the past three and a half years. He was off duty at the time of the shooting.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, Didarul is survived by his pregnant wife—currently eight months along—and their two young sons. The couple was expecting a third child soon.

The shooting occurred on Monday when an armed attacker entered a Manhattan high-rise and opened fire, killing four individuals before taking his own life.

The building houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) as well as offices of several major investment firms, including Blackstone.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, speaking at a press conference Monday night, confirmed that Didarul Islam had immigrated from Bangladesh and was the only child of his parents.

“Everyone we‍‍`ve spoken to described him as a devout and faithful man who lived his life with deep spiritual conviction,” the mayor said.

Commissioner Tisch praised Officer Didarul’s bravery, saying, “He was doing exactly what he was called to do—he put himself in harm’s way and made the ultimate sacrifice. He was executed in cold blood while wearing the uniform that symbolized his commitment to this city. He lived as a hero, and he died as one.”

The NYPD and city officials have extended their condolences to Didarul’s family and vowed continued support during this difficult time.
