75 injured as police clash with students outside secretariat

A student injured in a baton charge by law enforcement officers.

At least 75 students were injured and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday after law enforcement personnel baton-charged and fired tear gas on protesters outside the main gate of the Secretariat in Dhaka.

The clash broke out around 4:10pm when students demanding the resignation of the Education Secretary and the Education Adviser tried to break through the gate.

According to witnesses, police used batons, sound grenades, and tear gas shells to disperse the demonstrators.

As of 5:15pm, running battles between students and law enforcement continued outside the Secretariat premises.

Earlier in the day, at around 3:45pm, some protesters managed to force open the Secretariat gate and entered the compound.

Inside, several parked vehicles were vandalised, prompting a swift response from law enforcement, including both police and military personnel, who eventually pushed the students out of the premises.

The protest began around 2:30pm when students gathered in front of Gate No. 1 of the Secretariat, chanting slogans such as "Fake, fake!" and “Why did my brother die? The administration must answer!”

The demonstration is part of the ongoing movement demanding accountability following the recent tragedy at Milestone School and College.
