Intelligence flags possible chaos during July uprising anniversary

The Special Branch (SB) of Bangladesh Police has warned that fascist forces may attempt to incite unrest across the country—both online and offline—between July 29 and August 8, coinciding with the anniversary of the historic July uprising.

In an internal report issued on Monday, the SB expressed concern that these groups might exploit commemorative events organized by the government, political parties, and anti-fascist social organizations during this period.

The report has been sent to all police units nationwide with instructions to take heightened security measures.

According to the SB, since July 1, various programs have been held to mark the anniversary of the July uprising. However, between July 29 and August 8, fascist elements—many of whom are currently in exile—could intensify their propaganda campaigns and instigate nationwide chaos.

These efforts may include disrupting anti-fascist events, spreading disinformation, and attempting to destabilize the overall law and order situation.

In response, the SB has issued several directives to law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety and protect both public and private property. The key measures include launching special operations between July 29 and August 8, conducting regular searches of suspicious individuals, motorcycles, microbuses, and other vehicles, enhancing security in and around bus terminals, launch stations, railway stations, and airports, carrying out drives to execute outstanding arrest warrants, increasing mobile patrols in sensitive areas, continuing cyber patrols to counter the spread of rumors and disinformation, expanding intelligence surveillance activities.

The SB has also instructed that any signs of potential unrest or untoward incidents must be reported to the branch immediately.
