Chaos at vaccination centres in Dhaka

People of different age groups stood in line from the early hours of the morning to get vaccinated. As the day progressed, the queue to the vaccination centre got bigger and bigger. Even though the vaccination program was supposed to start at 9 am, it got delayed and finally started at 10 am.

Few hours into the vaccination drive, without getting the name-calling for the vaccine, the crowd surrounded the councilor and started making demands for the vaccine.

Azizul Islam, like many others, had been standing in line to get vaccinated, said, "I have been standing in line since 7 am. And now it is already 11 o'clock, when will we get vaccinated?” he asked.

Asraf Uddin, another resident of Banani, said, "I came around 8 in the morning to get vaccinated. I don't know when I will receive my dose.”

Allegations of mismanagement were heard from many vaccine seekers who claimed people with connections to the authorities were prioritized for the allotted doses instead of the eligible citizens.

The local councilor Mofizur Rahman told The Report, "Not all of our volunteers could come today because of the rain. So we will only vaccinate 300 people.”

It is to be noted that mass vaccination activities have been started across the country from Saturday (August 6) to combat coronavirus infection. The vaccination program, which started at 10 am on Saturday, will continue till August 12. The Department of Health has set a target of giving the first dose of corona vaccine to 32 lakh people in the country.
