In a dramatic penalty shootout, the Paraguay national football team defeated the Germany national football team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
The four-time world champions Germany were eliminated 4–3 in the shootout after the match ended 1–1 following 90 minutes and extra time. With both sides unable to break the deadlock in 120 minutes, the contest was decided from the spot.
Since their 2014 World Cup triumph, Germany have struggled to maintain consistency, including back-to-back group stage exits in the following editions. This time, however, they had shown strong form to secure knockout qualification with a game to spare, marking a return to form. But their comeback story ended abruptly in the Round of 16.
This was the third penalty shootout of the tournament’s knockout stage, and Germany’s previously strong record from the spot came under pressure.
The shootout began under intense pressure for Germany as Kai Havertz’s powerful opening effort was saved brilliantly by Paraguay goalkeeper Gill. Mauricio then converted to give Paraguay the early advantage. Joshua Kimmich scored Germany’s second attempt, but Gustavo Gómez responded to keep Paraguay ahead at 2–1.
Jamal Musiala kept Germany in contention with a successful third penalty, but Matías Galarza converted for Paraguay. The momentum shifted further when goalkeeper Gill saved Niclas Füllkrug’s low effort in the fourth round. Germany’s hopes faded further as Tah sent his attempt over the crossbar.
Nadiem Amiri scored to keep Germany alive in the fifth round, but José Canale’s effort was stopped by Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Ultimately, Paraguay sealed the historic victory when their final penalty found the net, completing a famous shootout win.
Despite missing multiple chances to close out the tie earlier, Paraguay held their nerve when it mattered most, knocking Germany out and extending their World Cup campaign.
