Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, has been recognized in Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2025.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate earned the honor for his critical leadership in guiding Bangladesh back toward democracy following last year’s student-led uprising.
In a tribute published by Time, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton lauded Dr Yunus for stepping up during a pivotal moment in Bangladesh’s history.
“After a student-led uprising toppled Bangladesh’s authoritarian prime minister last year, a known leader stepped up to guide the nation toward democracy: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus,” Clinton wrote.
The feature revisits Dr Yunus’s pioneering work in poverty reduction, notably through his founding of Grameen Bank in the 1970s. The institution revolutionized access to finance for marginalized communities—particularly women—through microloans.
“Decades earlier, Yunus established the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh to empower the most marginalized communities through small loans, helping millions—97% of them women—build businesses, sustain their families, and reclaim their dignity,” Clinton noted.
She also reflected on her long-standing connection with Dr Yunus and the global influence of his initiatives.
“I first met Yunus when he visited Arkansas to help then-Governor Bill Clinton and me set up similar programs in the U.S. Since then, I’ve seen the impact of his work around the world—lives transformed, communities uplifted, and hope restored.”
With his return to national leadership, Dr Yunus is being acknowledged not only for his past achievements but also for his present commitment to rebuilding democratic institutions and protecting civil liberties in Bangladesh.
“Now, Yunus has answered his country’s call once more. As he shepherds Bangladesh out of the shadows of oppression, he is restoring human rights, demanding accountability, and laying the foundations for a just and free society,” Clinton added.
