Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has greeted people across Bangladesh and Bangla-speaking communities worldwide on Pahela Baishakh, marking the start of the Bangla New Year 1433.
In a message issued on the occasion, he described the first day of the Bangla calendar as a symbol of the nation’s history, culture and identity.
He said the festival returns each year with a message of renewal, encouraging people to move forward with fresh hopes by leaving behind past challenges.
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep link between Pahela Baishakh and the country’s agriculture and natural cycles.
Despite advances in technology, he noted that farmers still plan cultivation in harmony with nature, according to a PID handout.
He also pointed to traditional celebrations such as Baishakhi fairs, Baishakhi Shobhajatra and Halkhata, saying these reflect the richness of Bangladeshi culture and promote social unity.
Referring to the current political situation, he said a new democratic government began its journey after the February 12 national election, following what he described as “one and a half decades of fascist rule.” Since taking office, the government has launched several programmes aimed at improving people’s living standards, including Family Card, Sports Card, canal excavation projects, and financial support for imams, muazzins, khatibs and religious leaders of other faiths.
He added that the Farmer Card programme is being introduced from the first day of the new year, which he said will play an important role in strengthening agriculture and the rural economy.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister expressed hope that values such as tolerance, generosity and harmony will further strengthen democracy and peaceful coexistence.
He also noted that global conflicts and crises make the practice of peace and mutual respect more important than ever.
Marking the occasion, Tarique Rahman urged people to rise above narrow interests and work for the greater good.
He expressed optimism that the new year will bring peace, happiness and prosperity, and reaffirmed his commitment to moving forward with renewed energy.
