Ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, travel on the Dhaka–Mawa Expressway and the Padma Bridge has become much smoother this year. Unlike previous years marked by severe traffic congestion and long delays, passengers traveling to the southern and southwestern parts of the country are now reaching their destinations without major hassle.

According to the bridge authorities, 28,415 vehicles crossed the Padma Bridge from the Mawa end in the last 24 hours — from 12:00am to 11:59pm on May 25. Toll collection from this end amounted to Tk 2 crore 64 lakh 21 thousand.

Meanwhile, 15,593 vehicles crossed the bridge from the Jazira end, generating Tk 2 crore 15 lakh 94 thousand 350 in tolls.

In total, 44,008 vehicles crossed the Padma Bridge during the 24-hour period, while total toll collection stood at Tk 4 crore 80 lakh 15 thousand 350.

To ensure a hassle-free Eid journey, the bridge authorities have increased the capacity of the Mawa toll plaza and launched a 45-day special programme. At present, up to 10 vehicles are paying tolls and crossing the bridge every three seconds. Toll collection is being managed through 10 lanes, including three dedicated lanes for motorcycles.

To ease congestion, a special bus bay has been constructed in front of the Padma Bridge North Police Station. The facility can accommodate 10 to 15 buses at a time, preventing disorder and long queues near the toll plaza entrance.

Meanwhile, regular highway patrols and enhanced traffic management on the expressway have kept the overall situation normal. Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and the fire service remain on high alert to ensure passenger safety.

Since Tuesday morning, passenger buses, private vehicles, and goods-laden trucks have been moving steadily on the expressway, with no reports of vehicles remaining stranded.

Passengers said the coordinated management efforts have made this year’s journey across the Padma Bridge largely hassle-free. Many expressed satisfaction over the reduced waiting time at the toll plaza.

Officials believe that if the coordinated efforts of the law enforcement agencies and bridge authorities continue, this year’s Eid travel for people in southern Bangladesh will remain comfortable and smooth.
