Eight more children have died from measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, pushing the total death toll linked to the ongoing outbreak to 583 since March 15, according to official data.
The latest fatalities were recorded as suspected measles-related deaths, the Directorate General of Health Services said on Saturday.
Among the newly reported deaths, the highest number was recorded in the Dhaka Division, where three children died.
With the latest update, the number of suspected measles-related deaths has reached 493, while the total number of confirmed measles deaths remains unchanged at 90.
Health authorities also reported a continued rise in infections across the country.
A total of 1,033 suspected measles cases were identified in the last 24 hours, increasing the cumulative number of suspected cases to 69,612.
During the same period, 53 new cases were confirmed through testing, bringing the total number of confirmed measles infections to 8,996.
The DGHS said 55,705 suspected measles patients have been admitted to hospitals since the outbreak began in mid-March. Of them, 52,050 have recovered and been discharged.
Bangladesh has been grappling with a widespread measles outbreak in recent months, prompting health authorities to strengthen surveillance and treatment efforts across affected areas.
Medical experts continue to urge parents to ensure timely vaccination and seek immediate medical attention if children develop symptoms such as fever, rash, cough or breathing difficulties.
