Measles-related deaths reach 983 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s measles-related death toll has reached 983, including suspected cases, after four more children died with measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours.

The four deaths, recorded between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday, were all classified as suspected measles deaths. No new confirmed measles death was reported during the period.

With the new fatalities, the number of suspected measles deaths since March 15 has risen to 884, while confirmed deaths remain at 99.

The country also reported 1,097 new children with measles or measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours. Of them, 63 were confirmed to have measles, while 1,034 were classified as suspected cases.

The cumulative number of suspected cases has now reached 160,184, including 19,447 laboratory-confirmed measles infections.

Another 953 patients were admitted to hospitals during the 24 hours, while 959 were discharged after treatment.

Since March 15, a total of 140,472 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country. Of them, 135,417 have recovered, according to DGHS data.
