Measles deaths in Bangladesh rise to 955 as five more children die

Bangladesh’s measles-related death toll has risen to 955 this year, after five more children died with measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8:00am Thursday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The five latest deaths have been classified as suspected measles fatalities, taking the total number of suspected deaths to 856. Confirmed measles deaths remain at 99.

The DGHS reported 956 new suspected measles cases during the same 24-hour period. This has pushed the nationwide number of suspected cases to 153,692.

Another 75 laboratory-confirmed infections were recorded, bringing the total number of confirmed measles cases to 18,726.

Since March 15, a total of 134,437 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals across the country, according to DGHS data.

Of those hospitalised, 129,489 patients have recovered, the health authorities said.
