Film actor Ashraful Haque Don has been placed on a five-day remand in the murder case over the death of popular film star Salman Shah.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Thursday after CID Inspector Mujibur Rahman sought seven days of remand for Don.

Don was arrested by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 9 and was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He was sent to jail the same day, while a court rejected his bail petition on August 12.

The case concerns the death of Salman Shah, whose real name was Chowdhury Mohammad Shahriar Emon. He died on September 6, 1996.

Salman Shah‍‍`s maternal uncle, Mohammad Alomgir Kumkum, filed a murder case with Ramna Model Police Station on October 20 last year. The case names several other people as accused, including Salman Shah‍‍`s former wife Samira Haque, her mother Latifa Haque Luchi, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, and others.

The latest murder case followed a court order directing the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station to register the earlier unnatural death case over Salman Shah‍‍`s death as a murder case.

Salman‍‍`s father, Kamruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, had initially filed the unnatural death case following his son‍‍`s death. On July 24, 1997, he applied to have it converted into a murder case, alleging that Salman had been killed.

The court later directed the CID to investigate both the original unnatural death case and the murder allegation.
