Bangladesh Railway has announced a 25 percent discount on train fares for senior citizens and persons with disabilities from May 25.

According to the Ministry of Railways, passengers aged 65 and above will be eligible for the concession.

Officials said the discount will apply only to the base ticket fare, while VAT and other service charges will remain unchanged.

Senior citizens will be able to use the facility through both online and counter ticket purchases after registering on the railway’s e-ticketing platform and Rail Sheba app.

The ministry said eligible passengers can use the discount a maximum of two times a week.

For persons with disabilities, the concession will apply to holders of the Suvarna identity card issued by the Ministry of Social Welfare.

Disabled passengers travelling on intercity trains will receive a 50 percent discount on Sulov and Shovon classes, while a new 25 percent discount will be offered on air-conditioned classes where those categories are unavailable.

Initially, persons with disabilities will be able to receive the discount only through station ticket counters.

Railway authorities said online ticketing facilities for them would be introduced later.

The ministry also said a separate proposal to provide train fare discounts for students on commuter trains may be introduced after a unified student identity card system is launched.
