Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo on Saturday said Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and development are best protected under the leadership of the BNP.

Speaking at a discussion organised by BNP’s Daganbhuiyan upazila and municipal units to mark the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, Mintoo highlighted the former president’s role in the country’s history and development.

He said Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence during a critical period in 1971 and later provided leadership during the Liberation War.

According to the minister, the country witnessed significant political and economic changes under Zia’s leadership.

Mintoo also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, saying she carried forward Ziaur Rahman’s ideals and contributed to national development after his assassination.

Referring to the general election held on February 12, the minister said voters had once again given their mandate to the BNP through what he described as a free and fair electoral process.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is continuing efforts to advance the country by following the vision of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia.

The minister also addressed social issues, including drug abuse and juvenile gangs, saying responsibility for tackling such problems rests not only with parents but also with teachers, community leaders, political figures and the administration.

He urged all sections of society to work together to maintain peace and social stability, adding that BNP leaders and activists have a greater responsibility because the party is now in government.

Mintoo called on party members to remain united despite internal competition, saying differences within a large political party should not turn into conflict.

The programme was chaired by Md. Akbar Hossain and attended by several BNP leaders and local political figures.

Special prayers were offered at the end of the event seeking eternal peace for Ziaur Rahman.
