Measles deaths rise as Bangladesh records second-highest daily toll again

Directorate General of Health Services reported that 16 children died from measles and measles-like symptoms across Bangladesh in the 24 hours till Sunday morning.

It was the second-highest single-day death toll since the outbreak began in March this year.

The latest deaths raised the total number of fatalities to 528 since March 15.

According to DGHS data, all 16 recent deaths were listed as suspected measles cases, with the highest number reported in Dhaka division.

So far, 442 deaths have been classified as suspected, while 86 cases were officially confirmed as measles-related deaths.

Health officials also recorded 1,306 new suspected infections during the same period, pushing the total number of suspected cases to more than 63,000 nationwide.

In addition, 128 new confirmed measles cases were detected, taking the total confirmed infections to 8,622.

Since the outbreak started, over 50,000 suspected patients have been admitted to hospitals, while most have recovered after treatment.

Earlier this month, the country recorded its highest single-day measles death toll when 17 children died within 24 hours.
