Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday called on citizens to work collectively toward building a democratic, inclusive and prosperous Bangladesh, drawing inspiration from the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and the spirit of the 2024 student-led mass uprising.
Speaking to reporters after paying tribute at Ziaur Rahman’s grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the occasion of his 45th martyrdom anniversary, the minister said the former president made a historic contribution to protecting Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and development.
He said Ziaur Rahman’s political legacy began with his role during the Liberation War in 1971 and continued through his efforts to strengthen the country’s independence and national interests.
According to the minister, the principles championed by Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia continue to serve as guiding forces for democracy and national sovereignty in Bangladesh.
Salahuddin Ahmed said the nation has transformed its grief into determination and continues to draw inspiration from Ziaur Rahman’s vision of unity, progress and development.
Reaffirming the government`s commitment to democratic governance, he said Bangladesh would continue moving forward through democratic institutions and public participation.
The minister also said the spirit of the student-led movement of August 5 would help strengthen the country`s democratic foundations in the years ahead.
Paying tribute to Khaleda Zia, he described her as a leader who made significant sacrifices for the cause of democracy and played an important role in Bangladesh’s democratic movement.
Special prayers were offered during the programme for the eternal peace of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia, as well as for the peace, prosperity and wellbeing of the nation, he added.
