In a visit on Wednesday, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government, toured three locations known as `Aayna Ghor,` which had been used as secret detention cells under the previous government.
After seeing the sites, Dr. Yunus shared his shock and disbelief about the conditions.
He said, “What I witnessed was beyond belief and deeply disturbing. The victims of this torture were right there with us. People were picked up without cause and subjected to unimaginable torture. I’ve heard that such torture cells exist across the country. The last government created this ‘era of dark age’ everywhere.”
Dr. Yunus expressed his appreciation for the Enforced Disappearance Commission, calling its findings “the final document for the nation.”
He emphasized that the victims were denied even the most basic human rights, thanking the commission for making these truths known to the public.
Along with his visit to these notorious detention centers, which included the Directorate General of Defense Intelligence (DGFI)’s joint interrogation cell, the RAB-2 CPC-3 cell, and the RAB headquarters intelligence center, Dr. Yunus was accompanied by advisers, representatives from national and international media, and several victims and their families.
These sites, used during the rule of the Awami League government, had been places where opposition figures were allegedly taken without trial and held in secret.
These locations have become symbolically known as ‘Aayna Ghor,’ or ‘houses of mirrors,’ reflecting the dark history of enforced disappearances.
Dr. Yunus’ visit serves as a stark reminder of the abuses that many have faced, and the ongoing efforts to bring these past actions into the light.
