Jamaat-e-Islami's top nine leaders, including secretary general Mia Golam Parwar and assistant secretary general Hamidur Rahman Azad, have been arrested by police.
Other arrested leaders include the party's assistant secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan, central executive council members Abdur Rob, principal Izzat Ullah and Mubarak Hossain and former Shibir central committee president Yassin Arafat.
The other two are said to be employees of the office. However, their names could not be known immediately.
They were detained from an office in the Bashundhara residential area of the capital on Monday (September 6) evening.
DMP Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Asaduzzaman told the media that several leaders of the central committee, led by the party's secretary general Mia Golam Parwar, were holding a secret meeting at an office in the Bashundhara residential area.
The arrested Jamaat leaders were secretly holding a conspiracy meeting against the state and the government in the office. They secretly came together to destabilize the country. The matter was confirmed on the basis of intelligence information and 9 people have been arrested.
He added that preparations were underway to file a case against the detained leaders for allegedly holding secret meetings against the state and the government. They will be interrogated showing them arrest.
Meanwhile, Jamaat claimed in a statement in the evening that police had arrested nine people, including seven of their central leaders.
The statement, sent on behalf of the party’s Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, claimed that a meeting was held on Monday with the secretary general Mia Golam Parwar in chair.
Nine people, including seven central leaders, were unjustly detained from the meeting. The statement also condemned and protested the arrests demanding their immediate release.
