Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday paid tributes to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to mark the 48th anniversary of his martyrdom and the National Mourning Day.
The prime minister placed wreaths at Bangabandhu’s portrait at 6:30am in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No 32.
After placing wreaths, she stood in solemn silence there for some time showing respect to the great leader and the great architect of Bangladesh’s independence.
A smartly turned out contingent of Bangladesh Armed Forces presented state salute, while bugle played the Last Post.
A munajat was also offered seeking the eternal peace of the departed souls of the August 15 carnage.
Later, flanked by the party`s central leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, laid another wreath at the portrait as the party chief.
From Dhanmondi, the prime minister went to Banani graveyard where her mother Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, brothers Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell, and other martyrs of August 15 were laid to eternal rest.
The prime minister placed wreaths and spread petals on their graves.
She also offered fateha and doa seeking the eternal peace of the departed souls of the martyrs of August 15.
PM’s younger sister Sheikh Rehana accompanied her during both the occasions.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his spouse Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib, his three sons — Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell — and most of the family members of three close relatives of Mujib were assassinated on August 15, 1975 by a group of army personnel.
Two daughters of Bangabandhu, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana could escape the carnage as they were staying abroad at that time.
