Autopsy of journalist Bibhuranjan completed, no signs of external injury found

The autopsy of senior journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar has been completed. The procedure took place on Saturday at around 11:30 am at Munshiganj General Hospital’s morgue, in the presence of police officials and family members.

Dr. Sheikh Md. Ehsan, the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer (RMO), who conducted the autopsy, confirmed that no external or internal injuries were found on the body.

He said, “The body was recovered from water and was in a slightly decomposed state. Upon initial examination, we did not find any marks of injury on the outside or inside of the body. However, we have collected samples from teeth, hair, liver, kidneys, and stomach, which will be preserved and sent to Dhaka for further analysis. A final report will allow us to make conclusive statements.”

The 71-year-old journalist went missing on Thursday morning after leaving his residence in Siddheshwari, Dhaka, around 10 am His family filed a General Diary (GD) at Ramna Police Station that night, reporting him missing.

On Saturday afternoon, around 3:45 pm, a body was spotted floating in the Meghna River near Balakir Char in Gajaria Upazila, Munshiganj. Locals informed the authorities via the emergency number 999.

Inspector Mohammad Saleh Ahmed of the Kalagachia River Police outpost recovered the body around 3:45 pm, and it was brought to Munshiganj General Hospital morgue later in the evening for autopsy.

The River Police also sent photographs of the recovered body to Ramna Police Station in Dhaka.

Comparing the images with family-provided photographs, authorities confirmed the identity of the journalist. His sons, Rit Sarkar and Chirranjan Sarkar, then traveled from Dhaka to Munshiganj to formally identify the body.

Although the autopsy was completed, the body had not yet been handed over to the family by 12:15 pm. The family awaits to transport it to their Siddheshwari residence in Dhaka, after which the last rites will be performed at Borodeshwari Kali Temple and the adjacent crematorium in Sabujbagh.
