Four members of a single family were injured in Keraniganj, Dhaka, after a compressor of an air conditioning unit exploded in their home. The incident occurred in the Model Town area.
The injured were taken to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka around 1:15 pm on Saturday.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a residential surgeon at the institute, said, “Three of them have suffered burns in their airways, and it is suspected that the fourth person’s airway is also affected.”
The victims have been identified as Md. Mamun (45), his wife Laki (38), and their two children, Mihad (16) and Siam.
Laki’s sister, Faria, told media that the family lives on the second floor of a house in the area. She said the air conditioning unit on the ground floor exploded during the night. While no one on the ground floor was injured, the explosion caused fire to spread to the second-floor residence. Initially, the family was not taken to the hospital as they did not have any visible burns.
Faria explained, “My sister lives there with her family. Although there was a fire at night, their bodies were not burnt. However, since morning they started having trouble breathing. Their noses and mouths were burning, and black ash-like particles were coming with their breath. That is why I took them to the hospital.”
