Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed grave concern over a growing trend of deliberate attacks on journalists and media outlets, warning that these actions undermine the country’s commitment to free and fair journalism.
In a press release issued today, TIB highlighted the alarming rise in personal grievance-driven lawsuits, harassment, and threats against journalists, calling these actions a threat to the spirit of an anti-discriminatory `New Bangladesh.`
TIB’s Executive Director, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, pointed to the continued decline in media freedom, noting that Bangladesh’s position in the World Press Freedom Index had dropped by 42 places over the past 14 years.
"The freedom of the press has consistently deteriorated, and the recent spate of attacks and threats only worsens the crisis," Dr. Zaman stated.
TIB`s statement follows a series of incidents where journalists have been targeted by powerful groups seeking to suppress media outlets and influence coverage.
The organization criticized what it termed as "arbitrary threats, attacks, and lawsuits" aimed at silencing independent journalism, particularly when the media challenges the interests of influential factions.
TIB also expressed concerns over the revocation of journalists` press accreditation and the intimidation tactics used against reporters.
Dr. Zaman underscored that such actions go against the principles of free speech and the vision for a non-discriminatory, democratic society that Bangladesh strives to become.
“Arbitrary attacks and attempts to regulate the media are indicative of authoritarian tendencies, which contradict the very ideals of a ‘New Bangladesh’—a country born from the sacrifices of students who fought for justice and freedom," he stated.
TIB also cautioned against the misuse of media power and called on journalists to uphold ethical standards to avoid abuse of their influence.
While acknowledging that journalists accused of criminal acts or those aligned with authoritarian regimes should be properly investigated, TIB rejected the practice of using the media as a tool for personal vendettas or political repression.
In its statement, TIB urged the interim government to take swift action to ensure the safety and freedom of the press.
The organization warned that without decisive action, the promise of media freedom could become an empty gesture, undermining the trust of citizens and the international community.
“If media freedom is not properly safeguarded, we risk allowing authoritarianism to resurface,” said Dr. Zaman, stressing the need for a secure and fearless environment for journalists in Bangladesh.
As Bangladesh strives to build a more transparent and democratic society, TIB called on all stakeholders—government, media, and civil society—to unite in protecting the rights of journalists and promoting responsible journalism free from external influence and pressure.
