Major Sadik’s wife Sumaiya Zafrin placed on 5-day remand

Sumaiya Zafrin, wife of suspended army officer Major Sadik, has been placed on a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Vatara Police Station.

The case relates to allegations of organizing guerrilla training for members of banned Awami League factions and affiliated organizations.

On Thursday (August 7), the investigation officer presented Sumaiya before a Dhaka court seeking a seven-day remand.

After hearing arguments from both sides — with the state prosecutor supporting the remand plea and the defense seeking bail and dismissal — Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefat Ullah rejected the bail request and granted a five-day remand.

Earlier, Sumaiya was detained by a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and later formally shown arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with the Vatara police case.

The case stems from a secret meeting reportedly held at a convention center near the Bashundhara residential area in Dhaka, during which 22 activists linked to the banned Awami League and its affiliates, including the outlawed Chhatra League, were arrested by DMP. The DB is currently investigating the case.

On August 1, the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) confirmed that Major Sadik had been taken into military custody from his residence in Uttara on July 17.

The ISPR also stated that a military court of inquiry had been formed to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.

Initial findings reportedly confirmed the allegations, and further action will be taken in accordance with military laws upon the conclusion of the full investigation.

Coordination is ongoing with the Bangladesh Police and other law enforcement agencies regarding the matter.
