Donald Lu, the US's Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, arrived in this country on Saturday evening.
He came here to discuss ways to improve the two countries' bilateral relationship, increase economic cooperation, and learn about labor and human rights.
He will meet with senior Bangladeshi officials and civil society leaders to discuss the issues of mutual interest. On Sunday morning, he is due to meet for breakfast with Salman F Rahman, the PM's advisor on private industry and investments.
Lu will have bilateral talks with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Sunday. The topics may include Indo-Pacific Strategy, the lifting of RAB sanctions, energy, commerce, security cooperation, religious freedom, labor, and human rights.
Upon arrival from India, Director General (Americas) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nayem Uddin Ahmed received Lu at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said on Saturday from a program at Dhaka University that Bangladesh would request the United States following Lu’s visit to this country to reconsider the sanctions imposed on elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and withdraw the sanctions considering its positive role in the country.
Lu was welcomed by Director General (Americas) Nayem Uddin Ahmed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport upon his arrival from India.
