The excitement is intense among motorcycle enthusiasts in Bangladesh as Royal Enfield gears up for its much-anticipated launch today, thanks to Ifad Motors.
According to Taskeen Ahmed, a director at Ifad Group, all models—including Classic, Bullet, Hunter, and Meteor—will be produced locally, and their pricing will be influenced by the exchange rate.
If the dollar rate stays around Tk125, the models are expected to be priced between Tk5 and Tk6 lakh.
But what is it about Royal Enfield bikes that has captured the hearts of so many?
A Storied Legacy
Founded back in 1901, Royal Enfield is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers still in business today.
The brand`s journey began with its first motorcycle, crafted by Bob Walker Smith and Frenchman Jules Gobiet, showcased at the Stanley Cycle Show in London.
While its roots are in the UK, Royal Enfield`s story intertwines with India, where Madras Motors started production in 1955.
One of its most iconic models, the "Bullet," made its debut in 1932 and continues to be a favorite among riders.
The appeal of Royal Enfield goes beyond just its long history; it`s known for its vintage look and nostalgic charm, evoking a sense of simpler times for many riders.
These motorcycles are primarily designed for cruising, emphasizing comfort for long rides. With their higher cubic capacity (cc) engines, they draw in those who appreciate both style and performance.
Cultural Significance
Royal Enfield bikes aren`t just machines; they embody a culture.
They have gathered a global following and are often seen as symbols of freedom and adventure.
In Bangladesh and beyond, these bikes have been embraced by celebrities, from Bollywood stars to Hollywood icons, enhancing their allure and status.
What Bangladeshi Riders think
As Royal Enfield prepares to make its debut, local bikers in Bangladesh have mixed feelings.
Ismail Hossain, a rider from Dhaka, believes that while Royal Enfield might not shake up the mass consumer market due to its pricing, it will likely become a luxury choice for true enthusiasts.
"It could carve out a niche for those who appreciate craftsmanship and style over raw power," he shared.
Another biker, Nabil Sadeque, talked about the emotional connection riders feel with their bikes.
"Sure, Royal Enfield may not have the horsepower of a racing bike like Kawasaki, but its aesthetic charm is undeniable. It offers a classy look that resonates with so many of us," he explained. He noted that the brand’s popularity often stems from its association with cultural icons.
On the flip side, Moshiur Rahman expressed his excitement but also offered a word of caution.
"These bikes look amazing and are built to last, but the vibrations can be a bit much, and the acceleration isn`t great. Plus, their mileage falls short compared to other bikes in the same range," he pointed out.
Awaited Models
The lineup for Royal Enfield`s launch in Bangladesh includes the Bullet, Meteor, Hunter, and Classic models.
This rollout coincides with a recent policy shift that allows the sale of locally manufactured motorcycles with engines up to 350cc. While importing fully assembled bikes over 165cc is still restricted, this change opens the door for Royal Enfield to win over Bangladeshi bikers.
As the launch date approaches, the excitement among the biking community is palpable.
Many hope that Royal Enfield will not just diversify the motorcycle market but also enrich the riding culture in Bangladesh.
With its rich history, stylish designs, and cultural significance, Royal Enfield is poised to make a lasting impact on the country’s biking landscape.
Whether it`s cruising down scenic routes or simply enjoying the ride, these motorcycles promise an experience steeped in tradition and style for Bangladeshi riders.
