The country's trade and commerce lost about Tk 5,000 crore in just two days, as a consequence of the ongoing nationwide transport strike.
Export orders have been delayed and prices of essential commodities have gone up due to the indefinite strike. Overall, the traders demand that the transportation strike gets lifted.
Loss of reputation worth more than financial loss
According to a 2016 study by the Dhaka Chamber of Industries, if the truck or transport system does not operate during the blockade-strike, the loss of trade and commerce in the country is above 2 thousand crores per day.
At present, the industry is producing 25 percent less goods than its optimum capacity every day. As a result, the amount of losses incurred could exceed two and a half thousand crore takas.
However, traders do not want to fall into the reputation crisis rather than financial loss. BGMEA president Farooq Hasan said the blockade of public transport was not desirable.
Speaking in this regard, he said the strike is detrimental to the overall economy. However, the reputation of the country's economy is more at risk than the financial loss.
If goods cannot be delivered on time, then we have to face a reputational crisis, and that’s worth more than the financial loss.
