Tight security around parliament area as crowds gather at Manik Mia Avenue

Security has been heightened around the National Parliament building in Dhaka as crowds begin to gather for the daylong "July Reawakening Celebrations," marking the anniversary of last year’s historic mass uprising.

Since early Tuesday morning (August 5), police, RAB, and intelligence personnel have been deployed across key access points including Farmgate, Asad Gate, and the entire parliamentary zone.

Surveillance has been intensified with the presence of Ansar, BGB, and army patrols. High-capacity CCTV cameras have also been installed to ensure maximum security.

The main events are taking place at the South Plaza of the National Parliament and on Manik Mia Avenue, where preparations for the main stage, sound, and lighting systems are underway.

Access to the South Plaza has been restricted to organizers and authorized personnel only, and roads in front of the Parliament have been closed to traffic.

Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Tejgaon Division, Ibn Mizan, told Ajker Patrika that security forces—including Dhaka Metropolitan Police, RAB, BGB, and the Army—have been deployed for maximum safety. He confirmed that special intelligence monitoring has also been implemented.

The day’s events include cultural performances, a drone show, and the much-anticipated reading of the “July Declaration.”

Though performances were scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with musical acts by various cultural groups, rain has caused slight delays.

Despite the weather, large numbers of people have started gathering at Manik Mia Avenue. By 11 am, over a thousand attendees were already present.

Shaon Alif, who arrived from Dhanmondi, told Ajker Patrika, “I came to be part of the July celebrations. Though the rain has delayed things a bit, it still feels good to be here.”
