The government has made online income tax return filing mandatory for individual taxpayers starting August 2025. On the very first day of the initiative, more than 10,000 taxpayers submitted their returns digitally, signaling strong early engagement.

The e-return filing system for the 2025–26 tax year was officially launched on Monday by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. According to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), a total of 10,202 returns were filed online on the opening day.

In comparison, only 2,344 returns were filed online on the first day of the system’s launch in September last year, making this year’s first-day total nearly five times higher.

On August 3, NBR issued a special order mandating all individual taxpayers across the country to file their tax returns online via www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. However, exceptions have been made for senior citizens aged 65 or above, persons with disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers.

If any taxpayer faces technical difficulties in registering for the e-return system, they may submit a paper return by October 31, provided they apply to the relevant tax office with proper justification and receive approval from the Additional or Joint Tax Commissioner.

Last year, over 1.7 million taxpayers filed returns online when it was made mandatory for a limited group.

The online system allows taxpayers to pay taxes from home using bank transfers, debit or credit cards, or mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. After submission, taxpayers can instantly download an acknowledgement slip and a tax certificate generated automatically from the portal.

The NBR also noted that a dedicated team of support staff is working around the clock via call centers and digital platforms to assist taxpayers with any technical issues during the online filing process.
