A fire broke out at an elementary school in central Tokyo on Friday, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of students and staff and triggering a large-scale emergency response.
According to local authorities, the blaze erupted late in the morning at Takinogawa No. 3 Elementary School, a four-story building located in the Japanese capital.
The Tokyo Fire Department said the fire appeared to have started near a music room on the top floor of the school.
Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene and launched rescue operations. One teacher and several students were rescued from the building and sustained minor injuries, officials said. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Television footage showed thick black smoke pouring from upper-floor windows as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.
A large number of fire engines and emergency personnel were deployed to the area.
School authorities said approximately 300 students and staff members were inside the building when the fire broke out.
Most of them managed to evacuate safely to a nearby park before rescue teams arrived.
Officials confirmed that everyone in the school was accounted for and no one remained trapped inside the building.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The incident caused concern among parents and local residents, though emergency responders were able to prevent a more serious outcome through the swift evacuation of students and staff.
