Colombia made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, defeating tournament debutants Uzbekistan 3-1 in the group stage to claim all three points.

The South American side struggled to find their rhythm for much of the match but capitalized on key opportunities when it mattered most. Uzbekistan, meanwhile, continued to fight until the final whistle and created several chances to get back on level terms.

Carlos Campaz added a third goal deep into stoppage time to put the result beyond doubt. In the ninth minute of added time, Hernández showed great determination to keep possession on the right flank before delivering an excellent cross into the box. Campaz met it with a precise header to find the net. Although the goal went down in Campaz‍‍`s name, much of the credit belonged to Hernández for his outstanding work in the build-up.

Earlier, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Uzbekistan made one final attempt to salvage the match after winning a free-kick from around 35 metres out. However, they were unable to make the opportunity count.

The final whistle sounded shortly afterward, confirming a successful start to the tournament for Colombia, who opened their World Cup campaign with three valuable points. Uzbekistan, making their first-ever World Cup appearance, left the field empty-handed despite a spirited performance.
