RMG workers, police clash in Savar

There was a clash took place between law enforcement officials and garment workers when the later attempted to take up position on a road in Ashulia, in the Savar upazila of Dhaka, on Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses claimed that around 2:45 p.m. hundreds of workers from several factories attempted to demonstrate in favour of a Tk 23,000 minimum wage on Bypail-Abdullahpur road in the Narsingho area of Ashulia.

Police attempted to drive the workers away lobbed tear gas shells as workers hurled brick chunks. No one was reported injury.

In order to scatter the workers, police also charged them with batons. About 3:30 p.m., the workers left the site, witnesses also said.

According to Sarwar Alam, superintendent of police of Ashulia Industrial Police-1, when the employees attempted to cause trouble in the area, police shot tear gas shells.

Sarwar denied about shotgun fire or baton charging.

A worker told wishing to remain anonymous, "We were demonstrating inside the factory, but the police still fired tear gas shells on us."

A similar altercation between police and RMG employees occurred earlier on Wednesday for approximately an hour starting at 11:45 a.m., according to witnesses. Following injuries sustained in this morning‍‍`s altercation between workers and police in the Konabari of Gazipur district, a female garment worker passed away.

The wage board for garment workers fixed the minimum salary of Tk 12,500 one day prior to the riots.

The new minimum wage has been rejected by union officials.

At the moment, Tk 8,000 is the minimum salary.

On Tuesday, union leaders threatened to hold harsh demonstrations . Before the announcement, workers had been on strike for twelve days in a row.
