A deadly road accident on the Dhaka–Rangpur Highway in Rangpur claimed three lives and injured at least 14 others early Friday morning, police said.

The collision took place around 5:30am near Pirganj Petrol Pump in Pirganj upazila, when a series of crashes involving two trucks and a passenger bus led to heavy casualties.

According to police and local witnesses, one truck slammed into the rear of another on the highway, leaving it badly damaged and stranded on the road. Minutes later, a passenger bus travelling from behind at high speed failed to stop and crashed into the damaged truck.

A woman passenger, Rahima Akhter Munni, 35, from Gazipur, died instantly at the scene.
Two others - Abdul Razzaq Howladar, 55, from Haragachh area of Kaunia upazila, and his 22-year-old son Arafat Sani Sanvi — suffered critical injuries.

Abdul Razzaq was taken to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, while his son was shifted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Both later died while undergoing treatment.

The accident caused traffic congestion on the highway for some time, creating long queues of vehicles. Traffic movement returned to normal after police cleared the wreckage.

Members of the highway police reached the spot shortly after the incident and carried out rescue operations.

Officer-in-Charge of Baradargah Highway Police Station, Maruf Hossain, confirmed the deaths and said the injured were receiving medical treatment.

He added that legal action is being prepared in connection with the accident.
