Police have requested a 10-day remand for Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, a former independent lawmaker, in connection with an attempted murder case involving the shooting of a Jubo Dal leader during protests for quota reform.
A sub-inspector at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate`s Court in Dhaka confirmed that Sumon will be presented in court this afternoon for a hearing on the remand request.
The case was filed on September 23 by Ridoy Mia, a Jubo Dal leader, at the Mirpur Model Police Station. The complaint accuses Sumon and 49 others, including senior leaders of the Awami League, of shooting and injuring Mia during protests in Mirpur on July 19.
Sumon was apprehended in the Mirpur area.
Before his arrest, he took to his verified Facebook account around 1:15 AM, stating, "I am going with the police. Will see you at the court. Pray for me."
In the last general election, Sumon was elected as an independent MP for Habiganj-4, defeating Awami League candidate Md Mahbub Ali by nearly 100,000 votes.
He is a practicing lawyer at the Supreme Court and was expelled from the Jubo League central committee in 2021. Sumon has gained public attention for his commentary on financial crimes, corruption, and various social issues.
