CR7: Birth of a legend

Mr. Champions League. That’s what they call him. Whenever you need a world class performance, whenever you need one man to deliver under the pressure of the biggest stage, you know there’s one man you can call on. He’s the name uttered equally by his fans and his critics. And he’s a living legend, with so much more to accomplish. That’s right, he’s none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese was born on this very day, the 5th of February, 1985.

Very few players in the history of football ever have the opportunity or the determination to reach the heights of Cristiano Ronaldo. Born in Madeira, Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo came through the ranks of Sporting CP before playing for big clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid now Juventus.

Manchester United fans still cherish Ronaldo with all their heart and Madrid fans weep as they realise the gem they have lost. Cristiano Ronaldo is a living legend, turning 36 today and he’s still going strong.

With 5 Champions league in his pocket, he’s the only active player in the world to boast of such achievement. And his tally of achievement is impressive to say the least. Ronaldo is the top scorer in the history of UEFA Champions League with 134 goals to his name.

He’s got five Ballon d’Or, most by any European player. With goals in every minutes of a football match, MARCA claims that he’s also got the most official goals in the history of football.

There’s always been the debate of Messi vs Ronaldo, but it doesn’t matter either way cause both are brilliant in their own way and own style. On this day, let’s appreciate the fact that we were blessed enough to watch them play in our time.

Peter Drury summed up Ronaldo in a few words when Ronaldo alone, carried Real Madrid out of trouble from a 2-0 first leg defeat to overcome in 2-3. As Peter said- “……..left to wonder, what might have been, what nearly was, what would have been, were it not, for one brilliant Portuguese"

He is indeed brilliant in every meaning of the word.
