The first phase of Bishwa Ijtema, the second-largest Muslim congregation after Hajj, will start on the bank of the Turag River at Tongi, on the outskirts of Dhaka city, on February 2, according to Ijtema Chief Coordinator Md Mahfuzur Rahman.
It is going to be the 57th edition of the annual gathering.
The followers of Maulana Zubairul Hasan Kandhlawi will join the first phase of Bishwa Ijtema to be held from February 2 to 4, he said.
With the participation of the supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, the second phase of the Ijtema will be held at the same venue from February 9 to February 11, added Rahman.
Thousands of devotees from home and abroad – including India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Syria, Chad, Tajikistan Turkey, Afghanistan, Palestine, the UK, and the US – are expected to throng the bank of Turag to listen to scholars reciting and explaining verses from the Quran and to renew their commitment to Islamic values.
On January 17, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, inspector general of police, said that measures have been taken to ensure the peaceful and safe execution of the upcoming Biswa Ijtema.
Uniformed and plainclothes police will be deployed for the security of devotees including foreigners arriving at the Biswa Ijtema ground.
The law enforcement forces will also ensure security through helicopters, watch towers, dog squads, bomb disposal units and CCTV cameras, he added.
