At least seven members of the same family, including women and children, were killed when a microbus lost control and plunged into a canal in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila early Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred in the Jagadishpur area of the Chaumuhani–Lakshmipur regional highway.
The victims were returning home to Lakshmipur after receiving a family member, Bahar Uddin, who had just returned from Oman.
The deceased have been identified as Bahar Uddin’s mother Morshida Begum (55), wife Kabita (24), daughter Mim Akter (2), sister-in-law Laboni Akter (30), grandmother Fayzunnesa (80), nieces Reshmi Akter (8), and Lamia (9).
At least five others, including Bahar Uddin and the driver, were injured in the crash and have been admitted to various hospitals in Lakshmipur for treatment.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the family had picked up Bahar Uddin from the airport on Tuesday evening. They were traveling back home in a rented microbus when, around dawn, the vehicle veered off the road and fell into a roadside canal in Jagadishpur.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj Highway Police Station, Mobarak Hossain Bhuiyan, stated that the bodies have been handed over to the family. Legal procedures are underway regarding the accident.
