Classes resume at Milestone College following plane crash trauma

Milestone School and College in Uttara has resumed academic activities for students of grades 9 to 12, gradually recovering from the psychological aftermath of the recent plane crash incident.

After a 12-day closure and two days of group counseling sessions, classes officially resumed on Wednesday (August 6) at 8:30am.

Shah Bulbul, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the resumption of classes to media.

He said that the first two days focused on prayer sessions, emotional healing programs, and psychological counseling. From today, regular academic sessions have started in phases.

Psychosocial counseling will continue for the next three months to help students transition back to normal life.

Principal Md. Ziaul Alam emphasized that the immediate priority is to provide mental health support to students.

“No one has been forced to return. Based on parents‍‍` feedback, students are being gradually brought back to campus,” he said, noting that female students who witnessed the crash are showing more visible signs of psychological distress and are being given extra care through dedicated sessions.

According to college authorities, a specialized counseling team—comprising experts from BRAC, the Bangladesh Air Force, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and the institution’s in-house psychologists—is working with students.

Although the initial sessions were one-on-one, group counseling is now being conducted across all grades, from playgroup to grade 12.

The institution’s founder and advisor, retired Colonel Nurun Nabi, said that students still struggling with trauma have the option to transfer to other branches or institutions if they wish.

He also confirmed that no academic activities will be held in the building damaged during the crash. The government has already formed three investigation committees to determine the future of the affected structure.

It may be recalled that following the horrific plane crash on July 21, Milestone College declared a three-phase closure, remaining shut until August 2 under the latest decision.
