The son-in-law of Sultan Shahriar Rashid, one of the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been jailed for seven years for making derogatory comments about the leader.
Judge Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Thursday when he also fined Fuad Zaman Tk5,000.
If default, Fuad will have to serve in another month in prison.
According to the statement of the case filed under the ICT Act, he was arrested on September 13, 2018 from the capital's Hatirjheel area.
Fuad was sued for making remarks on social media glorifying the killers of Bangabandhu and dishonouring the memory of the Father of the Nation on August 15 of the same year.
On July 4, 2019, charges were pressed against Fuad in the court of Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate, which later transferred the case to the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal.
Finally, the tribunal started the trial in the case by indicting Fuad on January 6 last year.
