Dengue: One death reported, 430 hospitalised in 24 hours

Bangladesh recorded one new death from dengue in the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 115, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest victim was a 10-year-old girl from Satkania, Chattogram, who died while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Data shows the highest number of dengue deaths this year occurred in July, with 41 fatalities, followed by 32 deaths in August (up to August 24), 19 in June, 10 in January, seven in April, three in February, and three in May. No deaths were reported in March.

The DGHS bulletin released on Sunday said 430 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in the last 24 hours, pushing the total number of hospitalisations in 2025 to 28,632.

July saw the highest hospital admissions with 10,684 cases, followed by 5,951 in June, 7,652 in the first 24 days of August, 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, and 1,773 in May.

Of the new cases reported in the past 24 hours, 120 were from Dhaka city, while the rest came from other divisions: 54 in Dhaka division (outside the capital), 12 in Mymensingh, 79 in Chattogram, 46 in Khulna, 42 in Rajshahi, three in Rangpur, 72 in Barishal, and two in Sylhet.

Currently, 1,281 dengue patients are admitted across hospitals nationwide, including 414 in Dhaka and 867 outside the capital.

Since DGHS began keeping dengue records in 2000, the worst outbreak occurred in 2023, when 321,179 patients were hospitalised and 1,705 deaths were reported.
