The High Court has called for an investigation into the shocking allegations of a $5 billion (500 crore dollars) corruption scheme involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
The case centers around the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, where it’s claimed that money was embezzled, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been criticized for not taking action.
On Sunday, December 15, the High Court bench, led by Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Mubina Asaf, issued a rule demanding answers. Barrister Sahedul Azam Tamal presented the petition in court.
This case was brought to the High Court by Bobby Hajjaj, Chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), who filed the writ petition on September 3, 2023.
Hajjaj’s petition called into question the ACC’s inaction regarding the investigation into Sheikh Hasina’s family members and their alleged involvement in corrupt activities related to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project.
The petition specifically challenged the ACC’s failure to act and named the commission’s Chairman and other officials as defendants.
The issue gained attention when, on August 19, reports were published in several newspapers linking Sheikh Hasina’s family to corruption in the Rooppur project.
These reports were included in the writ petition filed in the High Court. According to multiple sources, it is alleged that Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and her niece Tulip Siddiq used a Malaysian bank to siphon off $5 billion (500 crore dollars), which is around 60,000 crore Bangladeshi Taka, from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
These claims were based on information from the Global Defense Corporation, an organization that investigates corruption in military and defense sectors around the world.
