Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, the victim of mishandled C- section at the capital`s central hospital died today. She died at 1.43 pm today. Akhi`s husband Yakub Ali Sumon confirmed the matter at 2.30 pm.
According to the case statement, Akhi had been under the supervision of gynaecologist Dr. Sangjukta Saha in the Central Hospital for the previous three months, and her condition was described as normal.
Earlier, the gynaecologist assured Akhi`s family that she would give birth through a normal delivery.
Akhi was hospitalized with labor pain at the hospital under the supervision of the gynaecologist around 12:50 am on June 10.
Though Dr. Sangjukta was not present at the time of hospitalization, her assistant said that she was working in the operation theatre.
Some doctors and colleagues started the delivery without the presence of that doctor and without any checkup of the patient. Later Akhi lost her consciousness. In this condition, the newborn died in the ICU after the heartbeat stopped.
A case was registered in Dhanmondi police station last Wednesday naming 5-6 unknown persons and accusing them of `negligent death`. After the case, Police arrested the two accused doctors Dr. Shahzadi and Dr. Muna. They admitted their guilt and gave a statement in court. Other defendants in the case include Dr. Mili, Assistant Zamir and Ehsan and Hospital Manager Parvez.
Meanwhile, on June 16 the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) ordered Central Hospital discontinue operations in its operation theatre until further notice due to unsatisfactory services at the intensive care unit (ICU) and emergency department. Furthermore, the hospital`s gynaecologist, Dr. Sangjukta Saha, has been asked not to deliver any specialist services at the organization until the DGHS gives formal consent.
